The Role of the Coach — the Dream On Coaching perspective

The coach is not an expert in the day to day business of the organization. The coach’s strength derives from an broader perspective gained by analyzing and understanding all the processes and relationships in play.

He alone is neutral. He can stand back to bring a fresh, new understanding of the structures the team needs to put in place to build improved performance over the long-term.

He does not provide ready-made answers. Rather, he or she is an enabler. The team or the organization decides where it needs to go to succeed. The coach accompanies the executive or the team helping them overcome, one after another, the obstacles they encounter as they implement change.

He can be seen as a navigator laying out the route to follow so team members can position themselves in relation to the final objective.

The coach can liberate the team leader from implementing the process itself. The team leader in his turn will be more available to his team and better able to focus more intently on communicating the values and long term vision of the organization.
